History
The Klauß family has its roots in Bozen (south Tyrol) where the name Klauß first appears on a grave stone dated 1358. Resident in Mauthen since 1526, the family were owners of the extensive Plöckner estate since the end of the 17th century. As such, their duty was to keep the Plöckenstraße road in good condition and in winter, when possible, free of snow. They could levy a toll on every user of the road.
In 1776, the son Franz Klauß, who was born in 1743, inherited the “Kürschner” estate in Kötschach. According to records, the Kürschner house was built in 1640 and furriers (Kürschner) worked in this place until 1870, giving the house the name it bears to this day.
In 1803, the brewery was started, which continued until 1905. At the same time as the brewery, the hotel was opened.
